Corporate Overview Company History & Mission
ECW Corporation, home of COMPUTERTOTS® and COMPUTER EXPLORERS®, was co-founded in 1983 by Karen Marshall (M.Ed., Ed.S.) and Mary Rogers (M.A., Ed-now retired). As educators and mothers of young children, they shared the vision that computers would play an indispensable role in the education of children.
Inspired by work at MIT that utilized computer with young children, they launched their Great Falls, Virginia-based company with $1,500, a computer and ten 3- and 4-year-old children. From the beginning, they believed in the premise of active discovery learning in small, hands-on classes with a teacher who guided children through challenging yet fun lessons.
COMPUTERTOTS® was developed because of Mary Rogers' keen interest in previous educational emphasis in early childhood development. As the COMPUTERTOTS® program gained popularity in the summer of 1984, Karen Marshall began marketing the program to local preschools and child care centers. It was at this point that a national child care provider gained enough interest in this program to enter into an exclusive contract with Educational Computer Workshop (ECW) to provide COMPUTERTOTS® classes at their 12 sites.
Since that time, the program has steadily grown. A complementary program COMPUTER EXPLORERS® for children six through twelve, was developed It is presently offered in our learning ceneters and schools.
The concept took off and was franchised in 1989, expanded globally in 1994, and today the program reaches thousands of children and schools worldwide.
