Frequently Asked Questions for Parents

I have computers and software at home, can't my child learn at home?

When children work alone, they might skip a difficult task or stay at the easiest level. Young children also tend to favor repetitive activities. Our facilitator encourages children to meet each challenge and progress through activities, thus building self-esteem and condifence. The method of teaching prompting young learners with questions significantly improves their understanding and deepens each experience.

We are not just teaching children how to handle the computer but also teach children to use computer as a "tool" for learning, finding and creating something which has meaning to them. Our lessons also focus on problem solving, creativity, social skills and attitude development - a different focus than the independant explore method at home.

We don't have a computer at home, How can they learn if they can't practice at home?

That is why we have weekly classes to provide continuity in learning. We are teaching computer skills, problem solving, critical thinking and academic reinforcement. These skills do not need daily practice, we review the same information each week for reinforcement.

Why do you put 2 children on each computer?

Children develop self-esteem and confidence from seeing each other at the computer. They profit from watching each other before taking turn. Research proves that children learn from each other in group situations. They learn how to interact. Working together in a cooperative learning environment is critical for future success in school.

My child has computer classes at school already.

Our instruction involves much individualized attention. Schools usually cannot provide that kind of situation with large classes. On the other hand, our programs are not just teaching children how to handle the computer but also teach children to use computer as a "tool" for learning, finding and creating something which has meaning to them. Our lessons also focus on problem solving, creativity, social skills and attitude development - a different focus than the school's programs.

Aren't 3 and 4 years old children too young to start on the computer?

No. Research finds 3 years old is a perfect time to start learning about technology. They have no fear of making mistakes. They are capable of using a mouse, have learned some social skills.

What exactly do you do in class, anyway?

We teach technology skills and we also work on academic skill reinforcement. We want the children to have fun and enjoy using the computer as a tool; we also want them to feel comfortable learning the technology - feel that they can do anything.

Technology changes all the time. Why bother? It will be so different later.

What we are teaching is comfort with the computer. A feeling that they can handle technology. These classes will give them the experience so that they will be able to work with any changes which might occur in the future.

Do they just play games?

No, they don't just play games. Often, though, what to you and me looks like a game. The animation, colorful graphics and sound all add to the child's learning experience.

What software do you use?

We use commercial software. Our curriculum depeartment looks at all software for ages appropriateness, educational value, and several other criteria before placing it into lesson plans for our teachers.
