QuickLink1Summer Reading Adventures
If summer vacation hasn't arrived on your doorstep yet, it is on its way. Studies have shown that students can lose up to 2 months worth of what they have learned over the school year during the summer break. Enrolling students in summer activities which reinforce learning is ideal to stop the "brain drain", but not always an option for families.  Summer reading brings its own joys as well as benefits.

If your family is spending the summer close to WiFi and electricity, students can access Weekly Reader and Time For Kids online for reading news, stories and poetry.

If summer reading for your family looks more like sitting in a tree or on a hammock with a book, Scholastic and Barnes & Noble run summer reading programs for kids.

Scholastic has apps and tips available for parents on its website. As well as a page  for games, printables and the "Biggest game of ISpy Ever"!

At Barnes & Nobel kids can win a free book by reading by following these 3 steps.

Step 1. Read any 8 books and record them in a Reading Journal (PDF).

Step 2. Bring the completed Reading Journal to your local Barnes &Noble store.

Step 3.Choose a FREE BOOK from their selection on the Reading Journal list at the store... Enjoy reading!

More information about summer learning can be found at The National Summer Learning Association website.

Have you ever wished you could see the world through the yes of an artist? Paintmap.net allows you to do just that. After entering a user name, password, email address & CAPTCHA, you can see all the paintings that have been uploaded and tagged to a location, and upload your own!

Paintmap is a geolocation-oriented painting sharing website with two goals: To allow painters all around the World to locate physically the subject painted by others and learn about the artistic activity at a given area.  Two allow Google Earth users to complement the physical and photographic knowledge of a given area with the artistic descriptions provided by users. Last but not least, Paintmap contributes to the capture of our nature and human heritage through the artistic work of users as a record for future generations.
